In the land of Chu there was a strange tree. Its trunk was so gnarled and twisted that no carpenter would look at it. Its leaves, when chewed, made the mouth ulcerate. Everyone called it useless. But Zhuangzi said: 'It is because it is useless that this tree has lived for a thousand years.'
