In the province of Shan-tung, a jade peddler discovered a pendant of such purity that it seemed to glow with its own inner light. Word of the discovery reached the ears of the local governor.
The governor summoned the peddler and offered him ten silver taels for the pendant. But the peddler, a man of humble origins but sharp wit, suspected the pendant was worth far more.
Kai Lung, passing through the province, was called upon to mediate. He told the governor a parable about a monkey who traded a pearl for a persimmon, making the governor laugh and reconsider his offer.
In the end, the peddler received fifty taels, and the governor learned that a fair deal makes both parties richer. The pendant now hangs in the temple, admired by all who visit.
