Tripitaka had crossed desert and mountain for three years when he reached the Temple of the Great Thunderclap. But the scriptures granted to him by the Buddha's disciples turned out to be blank scrolls — empty. He had to return, offer his golden alms bowl as a bribe, and receive the true scriptures with words. The lesson was not lost: wisdom cannot be given; it must be earned.
