Daji, the fox spirit, was the instrument of Nuwa's revenge against King Zhou. When the king had written a poem insulting Nuwa on the temple wall, the goddess sent three spirits — a thousand-year-old fox, a nine-headed pheasant, and a jade pipa — to bring about the fall of Shang. The fox possessed Daji's body and began the corruption of the king.
