Chinese web novels come with their own vocabulary. Here are the terms you'll encounter most often, decoded.


Cultivation Terms


  • Qi (气) — The life energy cultivated by practitioners. Everything revolves around it.
  • Dao / Tao (道) — The universal truth or 'way'. Cultivating the Dao is the ultimate goal.
  • Mortal / Body Refinement — The starting stage of cultivation, where the body is strengthened.
  • Qi Refining — The first major realm; learning to absorb and circulate Qi.
  • Foundation Establishment — Building a stable base for higher cultivation.
  • Golden Core (金丹) — A condensed sphere of pure energy formed in the dantian. A major power milestone.
  • Nascent Soul (元婴) — A soul-like entity that forms after Golden Core; grants longevity.
  • Heavenly Tribulation — Lightning trials sent by the heavens when a cultivator grows too powerful. Pass them to advance.

  • Common Character Types


  • Protagonist (主角) — Usually an underdog who grows absurdly strong.
  • Young Master (少爷) — A rich, arrogant heir who picks fights and gets humiliated. The classic punching bag.
  • Daoist (道友) — A respectful term cultivators use for each other ('fellow Daoist').
  • Senior (前辈) — Someone higher in cultivation; used as a respectful address.
  • Master / Teacher (师父) — The mentor who guides the protagonist.

  • Story Tropes


  • System (系统) — A game-like interface that gives the protagonist quests and rewards.
  • Rebirth (重活) — The protagonist dies and wakes up in their younger body.
  • Faceslapping (打脸) — Humiliating an arrogant opponent publicly. The genre's signature satisfaction.
  • MCU (Max Level Return) — A godlike character returns to a weak world.
